2 Success Principles for Achieving Your English Goals
As we’re approaching the latter stages of the year, this article aims to encourage you to reflect on how you are progressing with your English goals.
Most people (around 80%) give up on their new resolutions by the end of February, while the ones who achieve their set goals by the end of the year are very few.
Today I’m sharing two success principles that are vital for you to implement if you want to become a more confident and better English communicator by the end of the year.
1: Be Consistent
The Law of Accumulation says, “A small thing accumulated over time can become a big thing.”
When it comes to success, whether that’s learning a skill, growing in your profession or becoming a better communicator, the Law of Accumulation will always be at the heart of achieving success.
It is essentially being consistent in your actions.
Whether your English goal is improving pronunciation, acquiring more vocabulary, or becoming a more articulate speaker, the key is defining daily actions focused on your goal, and carrying these actions out without fail.
So discipline and understanding how to build new habits play a big role in achieving consistency.
If you struggle with this, check out my book “How to Become a Confident English Speaker at Work”, where I go deeper into how to be more disciplined and incorporate new habits focused on your English goals.
2: Adopt a Growth Mindset
A Growth Mindset is a belief that hard work and experience will lead to growth and development. Those with a growth mindset see failure as an opportunity to learn, and they value risk-taking.
Basically, the learning opportunity of failure makes it worth taking the risk, and consequently, the fear of failure won’t get in the way of progress.
I’ve met hundreds of professionals who lack confidence speaking English in front of colleagues, and the common factor among them is that the idea of failure or making mistakes is too much of a risk in compensation for the learning opportunity.
Therefore they simply don’t speak up in meetings or limit their speech and, thus, avoid expressing their opinions and ideas. In other words, they get paralysed by a fear of failure.
This is called a Fixed Mindset, which is the opposite of a Growth Mindset.
Adopting a Growth Mindset is crucial if you want to advance in your English communication at work or in public speaking because making mistakes is part of the process of getting better.
